He played a pivotal role in popularizing exotica, a genre that captured the escapist fantasies of a post-war society yearning for romance and adventure. His work not only provided a soundtrack for the burgeoning lounge culture but also influenced generations of musicians exploring atmospheric soundscapes. With a background in orchestration and arrangement, Baxter's approach was marked by his meticulous attention to sonic texture and mood. He often combined orchestral elements with tropical instrumentation, creating intricate layers of sound that blurred the lines between real and fantastical environments. This innovative use of space and instrumentation allowed his music to evoke vivid imagery without relying on lyrics, inviting listeners into a world that felt both familiar and otherworldly. Baxter frequently explored themes of travel, love, and nature in his compositions, using impressionistic storytelling to weave narratives that unfolded like visual paintings. His tone balanced sincerity with whimsy, offering a lighthearted yet deeply evocative experience. The result is music that feels both playful and poignant, capturing the essence of longing and discovery.
