His work resonates deeply within communities that seek to preserve cultural identity while also exploring new frontiers in musical expression, often acting as a bridge between generations and styles. Engaging with his instruments—primarily the hardingfele, a traditional Norwegian fiddle—Økland approaches music with a minimalist ethos that emphasizes nuance and subtlety. This innovation lies in his capacity to transform folk motifs into abstract textures, allowing listeners to feel the weight of their heritage while embracing a modern sensibility. The spaces he leaves in his compositions become just as impactful as the notes themselves, inviting contemplation. Økland's songwriting often explores themes of nature, memory, and the essence of place, employing a reflective tone that balances sincerity with an almost impressionistic quality. His narratives are less about storytelling in the traditional sense and more about evoking feelings and imagery that resonate on a personal level, encouraging listeners to engage emotionally without predetermined interpretations.
