His approach redefines the boundaries of rap, often drawing connections between the rawness of lived experience and the elegance of fine art, thus challenging listeners to engage with both the grit of his stories and the sophistication of his presentation. Emphasizing a lo-fi, tactile soundscape, Gunn’s music is marked by its minimalistic production and gritty samples, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and immediate. His collaborations often reflect a tight-knit community of artists who share his vision, nurturing a scene where authenticity reigns supreme, and each contribution serves to elevate the collective ethos. In his songwriting, Westside Gunn frequently explores themes of resilience, luxury, and the juxtaposition of violence against personal triumph.
