Her extraordinary range and theatrical presence not only captivated audiences but also challenged perceptions of world music, making her a significant figure in the 20th-century exploration of diverse sounds. By blending elements of traditional Peruvian folk with jazz and classical influences, she opened avenues for cross-cultural appreciation that continue to resonate today. Sumac’s approach to music was intensely visceral, using her voice as an instrument of both storytelling and emotional resonance. She often employed an unrestrained yet precise technique that brought an operatic grandeur to popular and folk melodies alike. This fearless exploration of her vocal capabilities created a sonic experience that felt both intimate and monumental, drawing listeners into her world with each performance. Thematically, Sumac frequently navigates between the personal and the mythical, infusing her songs with rich imagery and a sense of longing that feels timeless. Her writing often embodies an impressionistic quality, where emotion reigns over linear narrative, allowing listeners to connect with their own experiences while being enveloped by her lush soundscapes.
