The albums that defined
the 1990s.
Our picks for where to start with 1990–1999 — with a one-line read on why each one matters.
The 1990s are the decade music last had a center. MTV mattered. Rolling Stone mattered. A song could break globally inside a week and consensus actually existed. Then the center starts giving way: alt-rock displaces hair metal, hip-hop overtakes rock as the dominant cultural force, electronic music breaks out of the club, and by 1999 the major-label model is staring at Napster.
Nirvana and Radiohead bracket the decade for rock — one band's Nevermind ('91) ends an era, the other's OK Computer ('97) starts the next one. Hip-hop's golden age runs through the middle: Illmatic, Ready to Die, The Chronic, Enter the Wu-Tang, Aquemini. Electronic acts (The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Daft Punk) pull dance music into mainstream consciousness. R&B and neo-soul rebuild themselves around D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu. The major-label rock canon ends; the indie one starts.
Where to start: OK Computer for rock's anxious pivot to the future, To Pimp a Butterfly's predecessor Illmatic for hip-hop's tightest debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill for soul's most articulate self-portrait, Loveless for the album that's still louder than any record made since, Songs Ohia and Pavement and Built to Spill for the indie shape of things to come. The '90s are the decade everyone has nostalgia for; the records actually hold up.
