Van Wissem's ability to bridge time periods encourages a reevaluation of how audiences engage with both classical traditions and modern interpretations. Employing a distinctive approach, van Wissem crafts compositions that often rely on the lute's delicate timbre, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive. His methodology involves a deep exploration of texture, layering sounds with precision while leaving space for silence and contemplation. This approach not only honors the past but also invites new interpretations of classic forms, making his music accessible and thought-provoking. In his songwriting, van Wissem frequently traverses themes of love, loss, and existential reflection, employing a tone that balances sincerity with an impressionistic quality. His storytelling tends to invite listeners into a meditative state rather than providing clear narratives, allowing emotions to simmer beneath the surface.
