As a master of woodwinds, he brings an ethereal quality to his music, breathing new life into the genre by expanding its boundaries through improvisation and experimentation. His work has influenced countless musicians, creating a ripple effect within the jazz community and beyond, encouraging exploration of unconventional sounds and structures. In crafting his pieces, McCandless often embraces a holistic approach, treating each instrument not just as a means of melody but as an integral part of a larger narrative. This methodology highlights his signature use of layered instrumentation, where harmonies build organically and spontaneous moments of quiet introspection contrast with vibrant bursts of energy. His performances invite listeners into an immersive experience that feels both intimate and expansive. Lyrically, while primarily instrumental, his compositions convey deep emotional landscapes, often exploring themes of nature, introspection, and the fluidity of time. McCandless’s storytelling is impressionistic rather than literal, inviting interpretation through rich tonal colors and dynamic shifts rather than explicit narratives. Each piece resonates with sincerity, allowing listeners to project their own experiences onto his soundscapes.
