As a solo artist, she stands apart by transcending traditional boundaries, showcasing how drumming can lead rather than follow, offering a compelling alternative to conventional instrumental roles in jazz. Kawaguchi's approach is rooted in a deep understanding of both technical prowess and emotional expression. Her performances are characterized by an intimate connection with her instrument, employing innovative techniques that elevate rhythmic complexity while maintaining an accessible groove. By embracing improvisation and spontaneity, she creates a unique sonic environment where each performance feels alive and unpredictable, encouraging audience engagement through shared experiences of discovery. Lyrically, while her work primarily focuses on instrumental expressions, the themes revolve around storytelling through rhythm—each piece evokes moods and narratives without words. Her voice as a drummer oscillates between playful exuberance and introspective contemplations, often balancing sincerity with moments of irony that challenge listener expectations.
