About Staraya derevnya

Staraya derevnya matters for their audacious exploration of sound as a living, breathing entity.

Through a commitment to improvisation and a deep engagement with the physical properties of their instruments, they invite listeners into an immersive experience that challenges traditional notions of musical composition. Their work acts as a bridge between structured form and chaotic sonic landscapes, creating a space where spontaneity reigns and the unexpected becomes a source of wonder. The group’s approach hinges on an uncompromising embrace of experimentation, weaving together elements from Krautrock with an ethos reminiscent of free improvisation. They often cultivate a tension between rigid rhythmic patterns and free-form explorations, allowing the music to evolve organically in real-time. This methodology fosters an environment where each performance can yield vastly different results, emphasizing the importance of the moment and intuition in the creative process. Lyrically, Staraya derevnya tends to eschew conventional themes in favor of abstract imagery and sensory experiences. Their voice is often characterized by an impressionistic quality that prioritizes mood over narrative, creating a visceral connection rather than a straightforward story arc. This approach invites the audience to engage with the music on a deeper emotional level, encouraging personal interpretations shaped by individual experiences.
