About Susan Alcorn

Susan Alcorn matters for her pioneering approach to the pedal steel guitar, transforming it from a staple of country music into a versatile instrument capable of expressing complex emotional landscapes.

By pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques, she has carved out a distinct niche that melds elements of classical and electronic music, encouraging listeners to reconsider the sonic potential of familiar instruments. Alcorn's innovative process involves a deep exploration of texture and resonance, often blending improvisation with composed structures. Her performances are immersive experiences that can shift from delicate, introspective passages to expansive soundscapes, reflecting her keen interest in the interplay between acoustic timbres and electronic manipulation. This unique approach not only showcases her technical mastery but also invites collaboration across genres and disciplines. In her songwriting, Alcorn frequently delves into themes of solitude, reflection, and the transcendence found in everyday moments. Her voice is one of quiet intensity, with an impressionistic tone that conveys emotion without relying on conventional narrative structures. This allows listeners to engage with her music on a personal level, interpreting each piece through their own experiences and emotions.
